What does ESL do?
ESL provides NHS procedures and treatments in private hospitals at no cost to the patient.
Patients are referred by the NHS to ESL. Operations are carried out in independent medical facilities (private hospitals) by fully accredited NHS consultants. The cost of the care to the patient is fully funded by the NHS.
ESL is also able to treat patients with private medical insurance. If you are a patient with private medical insurance and wish to be treated by one of the team working with ESL, please contact us.
Why was ESL established?
Under the Patient Choice Agenda and Choose and Book patients now have the choice of where and when they wish to receive elective surgery and other NHS services. One of the choices that patients can make is whether to have their treatment within the independent sector, at a private hospital.
Since January 2005 patients requiring cataract surgery have been offered a choice of two providers. This enables faster treatment and also allows the patient to make a choice regarding where the procedure is carried out. Since December 2005 all patients in England should be offered four or five choices for many other elective care procedures, one of which must be an independent provider (private). By 2008 all patients should have free choice.
Working alongside GPs and the Primary Care Trusts, ESL was established to provide the independent option and deliver real choice to patients.
