Patients' Questions
and Answers

Why am I not having my treatment through the NHS?

Since January 2004 and the introduction of the governmental National Choice Agenda, patients now have a choice to elect to have their surgical procedure undertaken by different service providers. ESL provides an independent option, an alternative to the traditional NHS hospital.

NHS treatment in private hospitals… what is the catch?

There is no catch. It is for you to decide where you would like to have your treatment performed. If you have selected ESL as your preferred provider of healthcare then you will be able to access this service free of charge. There will be no cost to you. The PCT commissions many services from a range of providers; one such provider could be ESL, independently funded by the NHS.

Who will perform my surgery?

All surgical procedures offered by ESL are undertaken by consultants who have full accreditation in both independent and National Health hospitals. In fact it may be the case that you would be treated by the same consultant through the NHS and through ESL.

Who will set up my appointment?

Once you have received your referral to ESL, a member of the ESL administration team will contact you to arrange your initial appointment with a specialist. The appointment may also include a pre-assessment consultation with a member of the nursing team.

What if I need to change my appointment?

Simply call 01473 279145 and we will reschedule the appointment for you.

What happens after my appointment?

If the specialist has decided that you require an operation, a date will be discussed with you, either during the initial appointment, or afterwards, when a member of the ESL administration team will telephone you. A convenient date will be arranged, and confirmed in writing.

How can ESL guarantee quality?

ESL works in partnership with the Nuffield Hospitals to ensure high quality, patient-centred elective surgery. All procedures follow individualised care pathways for each patient, in support of the Department of Health choice initiative. Nuffield Hospitals are monitored by the Healthcare Commission to ensure top quality national healthcare standards.
