ESL has provided choice to over 4000 patients since 2004. A wide spectrum of procedures has been carried out in the specialities of ophthalmology (cataracts and oculoplastics), general surgery (hernia repairs, laparoscopic cholecystectomies), vascular surgery (varicose veins), urological surgery (TURP's), and orthopaedics (lower limb joint replacement, arthroscopy, foot surgery, ACL repairs and shoulder surgery).
What does ESL offer the NHS?
ESL is a rapidly expanding service. Our aim is to provide purchasers (such as GPs and PCTs) with a reliable, high quality and affordable alternative in support of the Choice Agenda.
How do we work with you?
When a patient under your care makes a choice to have their elective procedure undertaken by ESL, they will be provided with our highest quality patient-centred service.
A member of the ESL administration team will contact the patient by telephone and arrange a convenient date for their procedure. A date will be booked at the most convenient time for them. Parking will not be charged for, and all appointments will be confirmed in writing.
All elective surgical procedures are performed by consultant surgeons who have significant experience in their area of speciality. Patients will be offered a choice of consultant whenever possible.
It is important to ESL that communication with both referrers and patients is of an excellent standard. ESL welcomes comments, thoughts, critiques and new ideas from GP and primary care colleagues.
ESL, in partnership with the Nuffield Health Hospitals, undertake patient satisfaction audits of every patient treated and shares that information with referrers. Clinical audits are also maintained and evaluated.
All patients who stay overnight under the care of ESL are cared for in a private room with en suite facilities.
The healthcare agenda is changing rapidly, both locally and nationally. In response to the rapid change, ESL is constantly updating and developing its profile to ensure that commissioner and patient expectations are met. Opportunities are presenting themselves for Primary Care Providers to shape the way in which healthcare may be developed for their local population. Traditional sources of secondary care are being expanded upon and there is now more choice available to you as a Primary Care Provider. ESL is one of those choices. We are developing pathways of care, in line with your needs, to support primary care in the management of a broader spectrum of care packages; elective surgery is just one choice. Primary Care Providers can make choices about how and where patients who require other forms of treatment and care will go. Examples of this include Diagnostics and Chronic Disease Management.
ESL has also joined forces with a local practice based commissioning group to form Eastern Primary Care (EPC). Eastern Primary Care is a collaboration of primary care and the independent sector. EPC is exploring various services which can be provided within primary care. Examples of these are the provision of a fast track biliary disease diagnosis and treatment service, and the development of a self pay minor surgery service within the community, launched in Autumn 2008.
